Final Reflection

Coming into this class, I expected a “normal” English class. One where you read a book, discuss and then write a paper. But when there were no books needed for the class, I was confused. Then when I showed up on the first day, I knew this class was anything but a “normal” English class. Since this class is different from the English classes I have had in the past, I feel as though I have grown more in this class than in others. Most of my growth has come from our free writing exercises. First, I have grown in free writing through the X-pages. I hate writing in pen because I like to go back and erase things, which pushed me out of my comfort zone to just go for it and let it come out however it is meant to come out. I am also not a doodler, and I like things to be very neat, so it was hard to let go and just let my mind flow. But I did find that the X pages helped me remember stuff more because I am a visual learner and half of my X-pages are drawings. Second I grew through the free writing we did when we weren’t allowed to stop writing. I like to plan things out and not just go for it, so once again, this helped my mind flow. Overall, I felt that most of my writing was research papers or based on some novel in high school, but overall, my writing was 90% facts and 10% opinion. So this class was very different because almost everything was opinion. I also have rarely written about my life and thought about how one small moment like a scar can actually shape who you are. Overall, this class took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to be more creative and think about what makes me, me.
