What Home Means When You are Homeless Blog

What Home Means When You are Homeless is written and photographed by Damon Winter, a famous photographer who has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work. In this article, Damon goes around Ithaca, New York, and asks homeless people, “Do you have something that brings you joy, something you can’t live without, something that has been with you through the years, something that makes this feel a little more like home?” Damon wanted to figure out what home meant to these people who didn’t have an actual home to live in. Many people responded with some object given to them by a loved one and reminded them of that person. To me, this text is somewhat sorrowful because these people have lost everything and have nothing. They usually have one object that seems like nothing to an average person but to them is everything. I think this text could be meat for anyone but has a different meaning to everyone that reads it. This text reminds me how lucky I am to have an actual roof over my head, an education, and, most importantly, my family and friends. I am able to have an actual relationship with them verse just a photograph of them. To someone else, this text could remind them of someone they know who is maybe homeless or struggling’s and make them want to reach out. Or to someone homeless, maybe it will make them want to go to this community and meet people in a similar situation. They can ask questions about how they get through it or maybe even make a new home.
